Encountering Guards (part1)
“Thank you for waiting! Here are your A and B sets.”
“Oi?! Missy, what’s the meaning of this?!”
“What’s wrong?”
“We ordered an A set and a B set, right? But you brought us two Aegyl Buffalo steak sets! What’s going on?!”
After finishing our quest, we returned to the guild to collect our reward. One of the rowdy adventurers was arguing with the waitress.
“Y-yes, today’s A set comes with rice, and the B set comes with bread. As you can see on the menu, the contents of each set changes depending on the chef’s whim.”
“But usually, the main dish is different! Like chicken or croquettes or hamburgers or something!”
One of the onlooker adventurers banged on the table in protest, and the other adventurers chimed in, “That’s right, that’s right!”
The adventurers’ sense of unity always seemed to come out at the most inopportune times.
“It’s because you idiots keep bringing in so much Aegyl Buffalo meat! Don’t blame me!”
The waitress slammed a tray down on the table.
The adventurers who had been complaining just a moment ago suddenly fell silent. The waitress apparently had hit a sore spot.
Their unity might have been quick to form, but it crumbled just as rapidly.
The waitress glared sharply at the adventurers, as if to ask if they had any more complaints. When she got no response, she snorted and walked away.
Waitresses in rough-and-tumble taverns like this one had to have a lot of guts to do their jobs.
The stingy adventurers always ordered the set meals at the Adventurers’ Guild tavern.
Since the tavern was attached to the Adventurer's Guild, it was only natural that ingredients adventurers had brought to the guild would end up there.
That’s why the meals were so cheap, but…
“It looks like the price of Aegyl Buffalo meat has dropped since we went fishing for them last week. I don’t think they’ll pay more than 10,000 Kurts for a single one now.”
In the last week alone, we’d brought in more than a hundred Aegyl Buffalo. No wonder the set meal at the tavern was going to be steak. There was simply too much of it.
“Well, it's not a bad thing to be able to eat steak for cheap, is it?”
This was mostly my envy speaking, as I couldn’t eat anything with this body anyway.
Ah, I want to eat some juicy, fatty steak. With a cold beer on the side...
“Sure, that's nice, but I ordered the daily set meal at the inn, and they served me Aegyl Buffalo steak too! I'm getting sick of it!” Cystie sounded fed up.
She was right. If they brought in that much meat, it was bound to show up everywhere in town. Probably every cheap inn was serving it.
That’s why the adventurers were so angry.
Well, I guess you could say they had it coming.
As a result, almost no one took the Aegyl Buffalo extermination quests anymore.
Not only was the reward low, but they knew they’d end up with more steak for their set meals.
I overheard the receptionist worring that the adventurers would ignore the Aegyl Buffalo and leave them to multiply out of control.
Could you please not foreshadow troublesome events?
Knowing my luck, saying such stuff would make it bound to happen and we would get overrun by a huge herd of bulls.
Even so, the rewards just weren’t worth it, so we decided to wait until the price went back up a bit before we started exterminating them again.
After we collected our quest rewards, Cystie and I returned to the inn and then went our separate ways for the day.
Recently, I’d been practicing writing this worlds language by using the list of characters Cystie had given me.
For some reason, I could read the characters just fine, so all I had to do was write them over and over until I memorized them.
I spent my nights writing, reading books, and relaxing while laying down.
Thanks to my insomnia, I never got tired, so I had plenty of time on my hands.
Even though I didn’t need to sleep, I was still human, so I still broke up my sessions with singing or dance breaks.
Cystie ended up reacting in the most natural way possible. Banging on the wall and yelling at me.
The first time I felt like a NEET who didn’t have a place to stay in his own home and had to sneak around.
After all that, I’d gotten to the point where I could write simple, everyday characters.
While I was planning to practice writing tonight as well, I also had made a plan to mingle in the city nightlife tonight.
Come to think of it, I’d never gone out at night because I didn’t need to eat.
“All right, let’s explore the capital nightlife!”
With this slogan in mind, I left the inn in high spirits.
The sun had set, and the city was shrouded in darkness, but thanks to the streetlights, the stone-paved road was bright and full of life.
When I came out onto the main street, I saw a huge crowd of people, some in each others arms, some laughing and singing.
There were elves, dwarves, humans, demihumans, and many other races all mingling together. Some spent their time arguing with each other and others simply drink their fill. All in all everyone had a great time.
The nightlife was very different from the activity of the day. I observed my surroundings with great interest.
I couldn’t believe how much the impression of the city had changed between day and night.
There also were a few adventurers around that had just returned from their quests and thus were still carrying weapons.
I saw the group of spectator adventures beeing being kicked out of a shop cause they were dead drunk. I ignored them. Getting involved with them would only lead to trouble.
“Cystie said the streetlights were magic items,” I recalled.
I didn't know the exact details, but there were plenty of magic items in this world, just like in games.
I mean, if there were objects that could produce fire or water, then why wouldn't there be objects that could produce light? Maybe a special iron ore or magic stone existed with those properties.
After all, this was a fantasy world.
